- White House national security adviser says Israel and Hamas are “very, very close” to a ceasefire and captive exchange deal, as US President Joe Biden and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu hold a phone call.
- Meanwhile, top officials from the incoming administration of US President-elect Donald Trump have reiterated threats of more violence in Gaza if a deal is not reached by January 20, when Trump takes office. US VP-elect JD Vance says Trump could “enable the Israelis to eliminate the last remnant of Hamas and its leadership” if a deal is not reached. Meanwhile, Israel’s negotiating team will stay in Doha, Qatar, as talks continue tomorrow.
- Gaza’s Palestinian Civil Defence agency says Israel killed at least 70 Palestinian children in the last five days as an Israeli strike on a school sheltering forcibly displaced Palestinians in north Gaza’s Jabalia kills at least eight people, including children.
- Israeli forces have launched more attacks on southern Lebanon, even as the Lebanese army progressed with its deployment in multiple areas as part of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah.
- Israel’s genocide in Gaza has killed at least 46,565 Palestinians and wounded 109,660 since October 7, 2023. At least 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks that day and more than 200 were taken captive.
